Famous Places to visit in Damietta

Amr Ben El-3as Mosque

  • Amr Ben El-3as Mosque is the most famous and oldest mosque in Damiette city.
  • It is also named the Grand Mosque "Al-Jami3 Al-Kabeer".
  • It is said that Amr ben El-3as bulit it, in the 7th century, after the famous mosque with the same name in Cairo.
  • The mosque was used as Church in 1219 A.D. by Ghan Di Brien.
  • The king of France "Lious the 9th" used it as cathedral in 1249 A.D. for religious festivals.
  • Then it was used as a mosque again.
Ras El-Bar

  • Ras El-Bar is a peninsula between the western bank of Nile River and Mediterranen sea.
  • Ras El-Bar history as Summer resort began at 1823 , when a group of Islamic religious "Soufia" were walking to Ras El-Bar to celebrate the "Shikh Girby" brithday in this area.
  • In 1865 Ras El-Bar was taken as a Summer resort and a few number of wooden and papyrus sticks cottage were build.
  • In 1891 the first restaurant was built by a French couple "Backlan" and "Cortail".
  • In 1902 the first map was drawen for the resort, the cotages and markets were numbered, the roads were lightened and Nile boats were run between Damietta and Ras El-Bar.
  • The tongue "El-Lisan" was built in 1938 and it is a concrete plateform with long 250 m to protect the north bank of the Nile.



  • Now a days Ras El-Bar is one of the best cities in Damietta has a lot of Services, Markets and entertainment programs for the Summer tuorist.
  • One of the best transport vehicle inside Ras El-Bar, especially for kids is "TafTaf", the picture being above.
New city of Damietta



  • New Damietta city is an extend of Damietta to offer services to the new port.
  • New Damietta consists of three areas:
  • Industrial area, about 20% od the total area and connected to the city by a real way and many roads.
  • The Summer resort, is about 2 sqr km for a tuorist village and 5 km long beach.
  • The residence area, is planned to have 270 thousand inhabitants by the year 2020.
Tourist Village
  • The Tourist Village extends from 36th to 43rd KM between Damietta and Port Said.
  • The village is located in the North area of "Al-Diiba". The village has a boat harbour to receive boats from all around the Mediterranean sea.
Lake Manzala
  • Manzala Lake is located between Damietta, Port Said and Dakahlia.
  • It is considered one of the best aquatic recources in Egypt.
  • Lake el Manzalla which is a huge lake that has a vast number of birds during the winter season. There are flamingoes, spoonbills, herons, pelicans and storks that stop here on their migration.
  • There is some good islands for tuoristing, like for example "Tal El-Dahab Island".
Famous Mosques


  • Al-Ma3iny Mosque, was build in 1310 A.D.
  • Al-Hadidy Mosque, in Farscour, was built in 1200 A.D.
  • Al-Matbouly Mosque and School, was built by Sultan Caitby in 1475 A.D.
  • Al-Bahr Mosque, one of the famous mosques in Damietta. Built in 1609 A.D. in Otman time.
  • Abu El-Maati Mosque that is surrounded by an enormous cemetery. The mosque was built during the Fatimid period when the town was captured by the Muslims. The mosque has been closed down and is falling into ruin.
Famous Churches


  • Margrigis Church, was built in 1650 and calld the "old Milk Market Church".
  • The Holy Virgin's Church, Srour square, was build in 1745.
  • The Roman Orthodox Church, in the picture being above, was built in 600 A.D. and renovated in 1845.
