Belgian Sheepdogs -- or Belgian Shepherd Dogs -- are a medium size (55-65 cm, approximately 20-30 kg) breed. In Europe, there are actually four varieties of Belgian Shepherd Dogs: Groenendael, Tervueren, Malinois and Laekenois. The varieties differ from each other by the colour and type of their coats. The Groenendael and the Tervueren have a long coat, the colour of which is black for the former and fawn to dark mahogany for the latter. The Malinois have a short, fawn coat and the Laekenois are wire-haired. In the USA the breed name "Belgian Sheepdog" generally refers to the Groenendael, and the Belgian Tervuren (note the spelling!) and the Belgian Malinois are considered separate breeds.
The personality of the Belgian Sheepdog reflects the qualities of intelligence, courage, alertness, and devotion to master. They are observant and vigilant with strangers, but not apprehensive. They should not show fear or shyness, or viciousness by unprovoked attack. With those that they know well they are most affectionate and friendly.
The rapidity with which the Belgian Sheepdog learns and responds to its master's every wish makes it a joy to train. Their intelligence and alertness make them suitable even for police and military duties. They are full of energy and they need a lot of exercise, both physical and mental. A bored Belgian Sheepdog usually finds ways to entertain himself, and may become destructive or otherwise show problem behaviour. On the other hand, a well-trained, well-socialized Belgian can be a real pride and joy, and it follows its master like a shadow.
