I will be working at the Imperial College, London from the beginning of July onwards.

Research Interests

My dissertation research focused on interorganizational networks and knowledge transfer among companies. I have several research papers relating to the dissertation still under progress. However, my current interest lies in the emergence of new industries, a topic I am working on in a number of new empirical and theoretical papers.

Moreover, I am interested in the role of language in organizing. In this vein, I am developing a concept-centric perspective to understand institutional change and the role of institutional entrepreneurship (an activity I call concept-mongering). Finally, I am working on a piece of research applying bibliometric methods to study the instiutional dynamics of sociology.

Bibliometric Methods

As a side project to my research, I have explorored the possibilities of using scientific and technological publications recorded in the ISI Web of Science as empirical data. I have developed a small program Sitkis that imports ISI export files into a Microsoft Access database and creates different kinds of data sets and network graphs. Current functionality includes exporting networks and quantitative data sets that allow comparison of institutions, journals, countries, authors, temporal changes and networks of co-citations and co-authorship. The program is intended to be used with UCINET, and it does not in itself provide added functionality that could not be achieved by simply manipulating data with Excel. However, it does allow much easier and faster bibliometric analyses. Initial network graphs can be created literally within minutes from downloading the data from ISI.

The program is available here.

Teaching experience

I have designed and taught the course TU-91.V Organisaatioverkostojen analyysi (the analysis of organizational networks) during the Fall term in years 2004, 2005 and 2006.

I have also organized, designed and/or taught several courses in Exima (a postgraduate study program at the Helsinki University of Technology for students working in the industry) during years 2005-2006, including: Research Plan Seminar, Introductory Seminar on Strategic Management, Introductory Seminar on Organization Theory, Introduction to Scientific Research, and Seminar on Advanced Research Methods.

In Fall 2006 term I organized the course Research Methods in Industrial Management I (entry level course for new post-graduate students) and gave three lectures in the course.
