1st Royal Guards is the Elected Prince's infantry bodyguard battalion. By a Royal mandate they are completely detached from the rest of the Kungsarme and placed under Haakon Magnussons command. Yet the loyalty of this unit is far beyond ties of flesh, any member willingly giving his life to save that of the Prince. Applicants are handpicked from the ranks of the Kungsarme, yet even then only a very small percentage even passes the first elimination. Their rigorous training includes a wide variety of skills, not only are they trained in all the combat arts, but also have extensive training in diplomacy and related skills, including formal etiquette.
Perhaps the most unusual feature of the Royal Guards is that the whole unit is in structure just like normal infantry units, but every member of the Guard wears a battlearmor suit on duty. Thus making it a rather formidabble infantry battalion. Elected Prince is always accompanied by two Royal Guards.
Duties of the Royal Guards are few, but even more important. First and foremost: Always ensure the safety of the Elected Prince and let no-one interfere. In practise this means that on duty they have jurisdiction over any person of government or military. Even when not on Royal guard duty, normal military personnel hold little sway over them, rank outside Royal Guards affords nothing beyond normal military courtesy to rank.
Second duty is to keep the Capital secure, again on this duty they override
most of the military. Essentially they are Military Police unit with additional
responsibilities.
(Technological trivia)
The battlesuit armor of the RG is a somewhat modified version of the one that Federated Commonwealth is using. It includes a ultrahigh band communications gear, enabling access to Orestes/Midgard central datanet. Also the commlink feeds back to datanet location data and outputs of all the suit condition monitors enabling monitoring of the vital signs of each Guard on duty. The suit also includes a self destruct mechanism linked to vital signs, obviously it is not wanted that the suit could fall into hostile hands, in the highly unlikely event that someone actually attacked and managed to disable a Guard.
