Short bio
I received my doctoral degree in automation and systems technology in 2001 from TKK. After dissertation I become faculty member at the University of Vaasa where I worked as professor (pro term) of telecommunications for five years. My job there was to establish the Master’s program in Telecommunications Engieering.  In 2006, I received five year term as a professor of radio communications at the TKK (nowadays Aalto University).  Currently I am the head of the Department of Communications and Networking. I am senior member of IEEE, associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, and vice chair of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Finland Section. In addition, I am member of Finnish Automation Society.

Research interests

I am interested in radio networks. Especially, I have been working with radio resource management and performance evaluation problems for variety of wireless networks including WCDMA, LTE, WiMAX, WLAN, and wireless sensor and actuator networks.  My research activities can be divided into four areas:

Energy efficiency of the wireless infrastructure
- Holistic analysis of the energy consumption of the wireless accss and local area networks
- Impact on network topology on energy consumption
Discontinuous transmission DTX and reception RTX at the base stations
- Energy efficient radio resource control

Projects: ECEWA

Radio resource management & performance analysis
- Transmit power control and interference management
- Channel adaptive opportunistic scheduling
- Load and admission control
- Cell coordination
- Pico and femto cellular systems
- Commercial off-the-shelf networks for public safety and crisis management

Projects: AWA

Cognitive radio systems
- Primary user interference tolerance measurements
- Spectrum opportunity detection  (sening, data base and data fusion)
- Control of aggregated secondary user interference
Assessment of the available spectrum

Projects: QUASAR

Wireless sensor and actuator networks
- Interference management (co-existence)
- Frequency hopping
- Medium access control
- Cross layer design, joint design of communication protocols, data fusion and control
- Performance evaluation (co-simulation of communications and control)
- Wireless automation

Projects: See wsn.tkk.fi
